Tips For Understanding And Using English Grammar For Beginners

By Mary Burns

Learning styles and abilities differ from one person to the other. This trend is replicated when learning new languages where some are kinesthetic learners compared to auditory and visual learners. A similar approach applies to understanding and using English grammar. Regardless of the category of learner you fall into, here are tips that will make it fun and easy to acquire the new language.

Listen to as many conversations as you can. The dynamic nature of languages means that a word or phrase can acquire different meanings depending on circumstances. By listening to conversations, you can identify the differences in word usage for use in your speech. It also teaches you pronunciation, pitch, word choice and other speaking skills. There are excellent audios for use over the phone and other audio platforms.

Get a learning partner. This is a proven resource for anyone trying to acquire new skills. The partner is an incredible source of encouragement and will motivate you to keep trying especially when it gets tough. Ensure that the partner is of a similar mastery level as you. Take time to practice reading, writing and conversations on different topics. The partner also helps you to keep track of vocabulary and gauge your understanding.

Read comic books and children materials. Such materials are prepared in a simplistic style that makes it easy for beginners to follow and understand. The materials also use contexts and examples that are easy to relate. It is also easier to relate to the images, expressions and words used on the books. For any learner, this is the perfect place to start.

Utilize free materials online. Institutions and individuals prepare and upload excellent quality podcasts and apps for learning English language and grammar. Choose materials prepared or hosted by a reputable institution or reliable individual. Identify your level between elementary, intermediate and expert to get the right materials. The materials offer lessons on translation, conversations, contextual use of language, etc. The audio and visual qualities should be reliable.

Take note of new vocabularies. This is a classic learning method. It enables you to slowly build your word bank. With a note book for new words, you can set targets for number of new entries in a day and easily revise your list. It also enables you to expand on the words once you sit down to make your revisions. You will not need to recall to the words in an attempt to recall its meaning. The list generated is used for exercises where you construct new sentences, phrases, expressions, etc.

Start with what you really need. English language is diverse. Each industry and section of society has a different style of expression. By starting with the area you are familiar with, it is easier to graduate to other fields. It also provides an opportunity to practice what you have learnt since you have a perfect context on regular basis.

Acquiring and mastering a new language requires time, effort and consistency. You need to set aside adequate time on regular basis for exploring new areas, practicing what you have learnt and reviewing areas already covered. Some areas will appear difficult than others. Do not give up or be harsh on yourself. As long as you keep trying, you will eventually master the language.
