Beginning Readers For Kindergarten And How You Can Help Your Child

By Ronald Morris

It seems like your little one grows up too soon once you realize they are in kindergarten. There are many different options for beginning readers for kindergarten. Here are a few ways you can choose the appropriate books for your child.

Asking for suggestions is never a bad thing. There are many different people who can help, including teachers, students and other parents of children who read with their child. Once you ask for their suggestions, be sure to ask why the book was a joy to read and their favorite parts of the books.

The American Library Association publishes a list of books annually that have been picked specifically for children. This list is a great source to use to choose books for your children. You should use the list for current and previous years. Keep these lists for future reference. These lists can help you find similar books that may be a winner with your child.

There are a lot of books that are a part of a series. If you are lucky enough to find a book that is part of a book series, get your child to read the other books that make up the series. They could enhance their reading skills and build their vocabulary.

Some children are easier to entertain than others. To help find books that may interest your child, think of different topics that your child likes learning about. Some children enjoy reading about space and the planets while other children like reading and learning about animals or traveling.

Many books that are written receive numerous awards, and it is what makes them stand apart from other books. Books of these stature are not difficult to find because they are branded with a medal on the cover of the book. You may be interested in books that have received the Newbery Medal because it is only awarded to the greatest novels that are published for young readers.

Make sure you are aware of the reading level. Sometimes a child may be able to read above their grade level, and other times, a child may experience a little difficulty. Spotting the best book for your child's reading level can be a complicated task. Open the book to the first page and determine how many words your child will recognize. The key to success is finding a book your child is comfortable reading word and vocabulary-wise.

When your child begins their reading process, it is a journey that is unlike any other. Your child may stumble with a few words here and there, but take your time and help them recognize new words and help them with words they struggle with from time to time. Reading can be frustrating at times, but have a little patience. Patience is one of the keys of success with reading.
