Locating Umn Off Campus Housing

By Nancy Jackson

Many students will leave home to further their education and this will involve finding suitable accommodation near to their university. Some colleges and universities have student flats or communal blocks but these often fill up very quickly. When searching for umn off campus housing there are a few things for you to consider before you commit to anything.

Before you start your search for a rental property, and make any decisions, you should look at your finances and calculate out how much money you have available every month. Renting a small flat will cost approximately six hundred dollars per month which may include basic furnishings. A large house with 2 or 3 bedrooms will come in at around fifteen hundred bucks and your utilities such as water and electric will be metered and you are charged for what you consume.

When you begin your search for affordable accommodation a good place to start is in the university itself. There will be many notice boards around campus advertising vacant apartments and houses that are available for students to rent. It is useful to speak with other students who have found somewhere to live in the area to see if they can provide any contacts and advice.

It will often be a struggle for new students to manage their finances when first away from the family home and many take on a few jobs to pay the bills. A simple solution to this is to take on a larger property and share with someone else. This is a very good option for many students as it means all of the costs can be shared equally between tenants.

Before deciding on a rental property you need to take some time to think about what furniture and appliances you are going to need. Most properties are unfurnished and you will have to purchase some basic furniture to make it more comfortable. You also need to remember that as well as your first installment of rent, the letting agent will ask for a returnable damage deposit which you will get back at the end of the tenancy, if everything is in order.

Some off campus housing sites will have other amenities that can be used by the students who live there. Communal study areas, libraries and fitness centers may be available as well as good internet connections. Other facilities are often offered and these may include supermarkets and bars which you pay for when you use them.

A plus point of these student house complexes is that they are close to the university. This can save students a lot of money by taking away the costs for using public transport to get to the campus. In many areas, a transfer bus is provided free of charge to and from the university, which also helps to save a few bucks.

Another thing to consider is the length of the tenancy you wish to take on. Most property agents will offer a twelve month lease but some will be flexible. Long term tenancies can often be worth considering as you can negotiate a discount if you are paying the rent in a lump sum in advance.
