Electrostatic coating is a method of painting that uses charged particles to more efficiently paint a workpiece. The atomized paint is charged statically by the equipment as it emerges through the nozzle. Centrifugal force is used to drive the paint out of the equipment. Before using the system, it is important that all component comprised in it are cleaned well. Thorough cleaning helps to avoid causing shock to the individual operating the equipment. Higher quality can also be achieved when the system is cleaned thoroughly. In comparison to traditional painting equipment, the equipment used for electrostatic paining is much more expensive. However, the cost can be recovered shortly through reduced cost of labor and materials.

Much preparation is needed in this process before the actual painting. Removal of debris is the first process of preparation, and it is important to ensure that materials such as debris, graffiti, dust, mold, and old paint among others are removed completely. One of the best ways of removing surface debris is through sandblasting. To attain better adhesion, one should sand the surface of the workpiece.

After sandblasting and sanding, the surface needs to be wiped thoroughly using various kinds of solvents and/or degreasers. There is a wide range of solvents and degreasers in the market that one can use for this purpose. In case there are some parts of the workpiece that do not need to be painted, it is important to mask them before starting to work.

One can improve the results achieved by applying a primer on the substrate first. In the same way, the modern market has various primers to pick from. When the process is done, masked areas should be unmasked and those that are removed replaced. Proper cleaning should be the last phase of the work.
