Planning Your Harpeth River Kayak Adventure

By Eric Bell

Right now in the world today many are enjoying the beauty of nature and the Great Outdoors. For the past decade or so, there have been more trips in the wild such as trekking, canoeing and camping. Some of your colleagues have been recommending that you all plan a Harpeth River kayak outing and adventure and you are all for it. Before you do jump on the bandwagon do read on in this article for some information that will help you out.

To see if this kind of vacation is for you, then it might be a good idea to have a checklist to go over first. This checklist will assist you in going over some key points that you should take into consideration so you can make the right decision possible. When making a decision or planning something, using a checklist is always suggested for use.

Top and foremost on your list should be your current health. Be fair and honest with yourself and gauge your ability to be able to go through this trip without any major issues or consequences to your health. Make sure that you are physically fit and will be able to survive at the least, a one to three day excursion out in the wilderness. Always put a premium on your health before doing any outdoor activity.

Decide also if you will be traveling in a group or not. Since this could be your first time, it may be better to travel in a group for you can help each other out in case of emergencies and such. Things are sometimes enjoyed better in a group in activities that involve the Great Outdoors sometimes, kayaking included. Before going out, do have a sit down session with your group mates and decide on activities that everyone will want to do, not just a particular minority.

Do study the course of the river beforehand and do research on possible kayaking and canoe paths to take. It is best to avoid areas where there are white water rapids and such, which are usually around the junctions of tributaries and the main river channel. Avoid these areas unless you are already a seasoned canoe or kayak enthusiast.

A good guide to have can never be understated for this trip. When choosing a guide, not only should he or she be friendly and knowledgeable in the job at hand but they must have a good safety record. They should have very minimal accident filled incidences if at all, regarding trips that are similar to yours. In addition they should know the current flow of the river and be able to point out places to be wary of especially around bends and curves.

Going on such a trip will mean you may need to bring a few items as well. However, to prevent bringing unwanted things, it may be good to go on a forum and ask people who have already been on the trip what to bring. In this way you can be more prepared and save money also, by avoiding things that you will buy unnecessary to the excursion.

In sum, this article has shown some considerations you need to think about prior to thinking about your next or future kayak adventure. Other factors need to be researched as well, especially if comes to prices and peak season rates and schedules. Always do a lot of research on all angles before you make a final commitment and decision.
