Ways To Boost Comprehension For Accelerated Reading Tests

By Deborah Scott

The use accelerated test on children ability to read has been used by parents as well as teachers to inspire children to embrace reading. A significant number of kids still fail to become competent in accelerated reading even after taking the tests. The article below has crucial information that will help you to motivate your kids to read more and improve their skills at home and school as well.

When your child is studying, set a timer at least for times. This way, once the timer goes off you are able to ask them questions on what they have learnt so far and ask them to draw up images of what they have done. This way they get a visual content of what they have learnt. You could also ask them to describe in one word what they have learnt.

You can ask them to read loudly and keenly pay attention to the mistakes that they will make while reading. Once they are done with one page, ask them about different questions from the page to find out if they have also understood. This gives them the ability to understand what are likely to be set in their examination.

Kids are not able to make the right decision on what to read and when in a bookstore they may end up books that are beyond their comprehension. A wise parent should be keen on what the child reads. Make sure you introduce your kids to books with simple terms and as their studying culture grows to introduce more complex books. A book with a language too difficult for the kids can kill the children morale and suck their studying energies completely. The books you chose for the kids should mostly have a single script; a book with different stories can be hard to comprehend for the kids.

This can be well tested by them reading to you and you read to them as a way of interaction. In addition, get shorter books that you can test them on as opposed to testing them on books that have several chapters.

Ask them to read the sentence again and try to find out the meaning of the difficult word. When they constantly do this, they will have the ability to interpret different meanings of words. The difficult word should be noted somewhere especially at the top of that given page. Through doing this they can also learn to use the word.

To create a studying interest on the kids read the story before they read and narrate the story for them, this creates curiosity to read and discover for them what is going on in the story. Studying becomes interesting if you already know what to expect and this applies to kids too.

If you do all this and your child still keeps failing the tests, there are certain things that you could do. You could take the studying down till you identify what your child is excelling at and start from that grade. After this you could discuss the test taking strategies then check on their fluency. If they cannot do this easily then it will be very hard for them to answer the questions. Ensure that the child has a good foundation on sight words and comprehension.
