The Need For Improving Educators Professional Development

By Janet Meyer

Education for members of society and especially the youths in a country is essential in realizing economic growth in developing and underdeveloped countries. This realization has resulted in creation of various levels of education and a lot of awareness creation, emphasis and capital investment in educating the youths. Many people have had easy accessibility to affordable education which has improved respect of teachers and enabled many more to engage in teaching as a professional occupation. Tutors are paid according to positions they hold in a school which has made many tutors consider advancing careers. Below are motives for improving educators professional development in their career.

Professional Qualifications in education that instructors have acquired. Specific job capacities in learning institutions demand for the educators to have specified educational qualifications to work in them. These positions are reserved for individuals who meet those minimum qualifications. Whenever the positions become vacant, only people with indicated qualifications may be considered.

Years of experience as a practicing teaching member of staff. Occasionally, more advanced positions in an institution open up that need filling. This may be due to expansion, retirement, quitting or death of a teacher. When this happens, the administrators may choose to promote an existing instructor to take up the position based on the years they have worked in the institution.

Excellent scores in performance appraisal reports. Whenever promotions are necessary, the administration may decide to conduct an analysis of teacher performance in a given duration of time. Performance analysis is necessary for motivation of other instructors and for fairness of the entire process. The teacher with the highest performance score is promoted to take up the responsibility.

The physical and market size of a school teachers are employed in is another vital element. Teachers may not advance in career if the positions that they could advance in are not present in the school they teach in. This means that to advance, the positions must be clearly outlined in the school administrative structure. Bigger schools give potential for advancement than small and upcoming schools.

Commitment and passion of tutors towards teaching. To conduct classes and attain the intended goals and objectives for lectures within the stipulated time in the course outline, tutors must be part of the lecture. They must have excellent communication skills, love and passion to work with students to help them comprehend the lessons effectively without fail.

Instructor gender. Gender parity issues in recent researches have concluded that in many professions, including teaching, the rate at which men are promoted and the number of men promoted is higher than that of women. Generally, men are perceived to be better, skilled and capable of taking responsibility promptly than women. Therefore, men are easily promoted than women.

Ethnicity and political influences. There is a saying that goes, man is to error. When positions become vacant in an institution, no matter what transparency measures are implemented, it is nearly impossible to prevent the influences of politics and ethnicity. This influences lead to favoring and promotions of instructors that share cultural ties with the management of institutions they work in at the expense of their peers.
