The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Instant Tan Spray

By Haywood Hunter

Looking dark and tan is a must for many in the western world. Some believe it makes them look healthier, skinnier, and richer. Everyone has his or her reasons. If being tan is important though, one must take a look at the pros and cons of opting to undergo instant tan spray rather than lying out in the sun.

By heading to the beach or tanning bed, one needs to think about their health and different risks that the UV rays may cause. There is little protection from the sun when sitting directly under it, and this can eventually lead to skin cancer. Many opt to go for this option that is done in a booth in a salon, far enough away from the UV rays and the consequences they have on the body. Their skin does not get nearly as damaged, and will keep the skin looking healthy longer. All too often there are people who have enjoyed the sun a bit too much leaving their skin with leather looking texture.

One of the most enticing aspects of going this route is that there is instant gratification. A person can walk in feeling pasty, and then leave with a beautiful tan color. This can be a great way to go if there are special parties coming up, class reunions, or just for a little treat that is deserved.

Like so many things in life, there is also a down side. The chemical that is used in the spray is called dihdroxyacetone, DHA. This is only applied to the surface of the skin and has been FDA approved. But be weary. There may still be side effects and reactions. It might be a good idea to check in with the doctor first and see what he or she has to say about this. By getting it in the eyes, on the lips, or accidentally inhaled, there may be reactions.

Thankfully DHA only stays on the very surface of the skin. Unfortunately though, this makes the tan only stay around for a few days. The color then fades when the dead skin cells start shedding, which is pretty frequent. By exfoliating everyday on top of that, the color fades even quicker. It is recommended to do the exfoliation right before getting the spray done, and then waiting until it has faded before exfoliating again. This also helps the tan look more even on the skin.

Beware that this may leave stains on the bed, clothes, hands, and possibly other objects. Wait at least twenty-minutes before putting on fresh clothes. And if the hands get stained, wash them right away with soap and water.

This spray does not protect the skin from the UV rays, so it is of utmost importance that one keeps the sunscreen, sunglasses, and head coverings nearby. And if at all possible, try and stay in the shade and hydrated. Just because one has a tan, does not mean that they are protected from the sun.

Instant tan spray is a great way to get some color quickly and not receive the damage of the sun. It has some drawbacks though that should be considered. Thinking through the pros and cons before getting it done, as well as consulting with a doctor, may be some smart options. There is nothing worse than getting side effects that could have been avoided.
