Kinds Of Handheld Foam Saw And Their Uses

By Anthony Allen

Some people have work projects that uses foams and they need to cut and shape them according to what they need it for. Using an ordinary blade, cutter, saw or any sharp tools is not advisable because these materials might get deformed due to their texture. That is why a specialized tool is needed for doing this task.

A taut thin metal wire is one thing that composed this material which are made usually from nichrome or stainless steel. This handheld foam saw will have its wire heated with an electrical resistance that vaporizes the material even before contact is made with it. You can buy these devices commercially or create one yourself according to your preferences and needs.

These wires have two types used for the task which are called preformed and tensioned. Preformed ones are shaped manually or with the help of pliers into forms and are attached to the handle that the operator use in guiding it through foam. This will allow you to create numerous copies of identical patterns which is advantageous when the project requires it.

The former kind is held tightly by the frame with springs and a single strand of stainless steel is used by people usually rather than nichrome for this. Musical instrument strings or leader wire meant for fishing is used on homemade ones because they are inexpensive and readily available. Allow wires that are based on nickel are preferred though by those made commercially.

Under this type, different kinds of cutters are available depending on their structure and specific purpose. Handheld uses a short string and can be easily handled by the operator in cutting the foam according to what they need. This is what people commonly create at home by themselves because of its simplicity that enables anyone to do it.

Simple manual table cutters could either be vertical or horizontal and uses the table for securing or to guide the foam. Hobbyists utilize vertical one in cutting complex small shapes like letters which are prismatic only. Usually, the horizontal is for construction as well as packaging where both sides have tracks that the wire is being attached to and have an up and down movement for cutting exact sizes.

Template guided ones are those with a template on each side of foam block that has a string attached to them and guides in forming tapered or prismatic shapes. This could be manually moved with your hands or a pulley mechanism that has weights connected on each string ends. The operator skills and their templates affect how accurate the created patterns are.

Push through slicer attached the tensioned wires parallel to each other with even spaces into frames of vertical or horizontal one. Larger blocks either are pushed through in rollers or using gravity and sliced into sheets for construction work purposes. The strings are replaceable and adjustable which allows producing of different thickness.

Computer numerically controlled guide a tensioned wire in forming prismatic or tapered shapes on either side of the block. Accuracy is affected by the various components of this device and how tight the string is. Lathe attachments are offered by some which makes cutting spiral shapes possible.
