Discovering Affordable Housing For Young Adults

By Kimberly Brooks

When it comes to looking for a place to live, it can often be difficult, especially for individuals or couples on a limited income. For, while there are government programs, most affordable housing for young adults often have a waiting list, some of more than two years. Whether looking at HUD, Section 8 or a voucher program, it is important to apply as soon as the qualified party or parties recognize eligibility.

In some cases, individuals and couples can qualify, most often if receiving food stamps or other assistance from the government, at least in the United States. While this is the case, there are also a number low income properties which are not associated with these programs provided by landlords or property management companies. For example, one such property, the monolithic dome rentals in Italy, Texas which started out as an extended stay property now offers properties for $100 to $145/week, utilities included.

Remaining flexible and being willing to adapt to different areas and floor plans goes a long way in being able to locate an affordable property. For, whether buying or renting a two or three bedroom home, older homes often need a great deal of work while newer ones are often more expensive. As such, whether buying a fixer upper or a new home, there is going to be a lot of extra cost compared to renting.

Public Housing, often known as Section 8, provides affordable rentals in different areas of the United States for low income families, seniors and individuals with disabilities. In most cases, individuals must file an application through a management office, which is then reviewed by and either approved or rejected by the Section 8 office in the area.

Voucher programs are a bit different from Section 8, HUD and subsidized housing. For, most often an individual will go ahead and rent a property knowing that one meets the qualification standards for the program. While this is the case, most properties also have qualification guidelines which can often be difficult to meet for individuals on fixed or low income.

Before buying or renting any property, it is important to peruse the neighborhood or complex. For, there can often be issues with prostitution and drug dealing, especially in lower income areas. As such, by taking the time to assure this is not the case, individuals will be much happier in the long run.

While most low income properties are managed by different aspects of the governments, if one has difficulty locating a public housing agent, contacting a HUD field office is often a good idea. Whereas, landlords interested in offering properties through any government low-income based program can also find out more by contacting a HUD representative.

Younger people can often locate low income rentals without going through these organizations. In one case, the Section 8 website has suggested that buying a mobile home, renting a RV, sharing a house or subletting are all ways in which younger individuals and couples can find affordable housing. Whereas, there are a number of young adults whom now house or pet sit in different areas on a full time basis rather than pay for a rental.
