Biotechnology is any technology that is based on biology. This encompasses a huge number of things that are used in most people's day-to-day lives. By harnessing both the cellular and the biomolecular processes of living creatures, biotechnologies have many ways of improving people's lives as well as improving the condition of and lowering human impact on the planet.

People have been making use of the power of biology for thousands of years, long before anyone really knew what was going on at a molecular level. Bread and cheese are two foods that require a biological process in order for them to be made, and dairy products are preserved using a biological process. These practices could be considered precursors of biotechnology.

The most modern advancements in this branch of technology and biology have enabled countless breakthrough products and technologies. Some of these are able to combat diseases that are rare and difficult to treat. These breakthroughs are also enabling people to get food to needy people, lowering the environmental impact, and improving the efficiency of industrial manufacturing.

The field of healthcare has been changed enormously with the help of this type of technology to the advantage of patients everywhere. A number of diseases that previously had no cure can now be treated by making use of biotechnology. Since diseases and healthcare needs are always changing, biotechnology is sure to be an essential component of whatever happens in medicine going forward into the future.

The profession of farming has changed a lot due to this type of technology, and both farmers and consumers everywhere are reaping the benefits. Because of these new innovations, crops can be grown that are more nutritional, and that are resistant to bugs and pests that can destroy crops. All of this comes with lowering the environmental impact of agriculture.

Facilities known as biorefineries are places where biomass is studied and refined so that it can be used as fuel. Some scientists believe that this may be the future of fuel and could replace fossil fuels, or at least be one of a combination of alternatives. This fuel is renewable, and it also would help to reduce greenhouse gasses.

One of the aims of scientists and researchers working in the field of biotechnology is to reduce the rate of infectious diseases that are always changing and growing stronger, and are a great risk to society. This could save millions of lives, especially children, who are lost to these diseases. This field of science also completely changes the way people now look at diseases that were once thought to be fatal and incurable.

Industries can help lower their environmental impact by harnessing biotechnology to increase their efficiency. On a more individual level, this technology also enables the washing of clothes at a lower temperature. It can also lower overall water usage, which lowers waste levels.
