Things You Need To Know About Psycho Educational Assessment

By Steven Long

Psycho educational assessments are sets of exams standardized to evaluate mental processes hidden in the educational performance of the student. These can be taken by children and teenagers as well as adult students to identify any mental disabilities hidden which may impact the social, academic and overall skills they have. These can help to find ways to improve the learning abilities.

There may be an observation by the teacher of your kid having a difficulty in learning specific subjects compared to his fellow students and are worried about it. They could suggest and request for him to take a psycho educational assessment Calgary to find out more about it. Here are some things you need to know to better prepare yourself and your child during this process.

There are two kinds of major exams your child will have to undergo. The first one is testing his cognitive ability or intelligence in order to understand the related abilities they have and their potential. The other is testing their academic abilities like their skills in math, reading, oral reading and writing.

The results will then be compared in order to find any learning disability that the student may have. Other exams may be needed to be taken based on the results such as learning and memory functions, auditory processing, social skills, executive functions or academic skills. This is the reason that you are asked to see the psychologist again and again to evaluate the results and see what else needs to be done.

Usually, the school is the one which conducts these examinations with their resident psychologist helping them with it. They and the parents such as yourself will request the school district to have the assessment and an investigation will be made to determine if there is really a need for it. Waiting for the approval will take time and it will be conducted after a few months of the approval.

If you are unable to get an approval or wait for one then you can go to a registered psychologist outside of the school system for help. The advantage of this is that they are able to diagnose legally if your child has any mental disorders during the evaluation process. Compared to the assessment the school conducts which are free, you need to pay a fee when you are to use this option.

Behavior is observed as well during the time your kid is taking the examination in order to see if what situations cause his inattention, frustration, fatigue or delayed response. Encourage him to remain calm and collected and do his best during these exams. There should be breaks when needed during the exams.

After the exams, they will inform you if there are any potential mental disabilities and provide you with accommodation and intervention. This agreement is called Individual Educational Plan. And you must be informed with all the process together with your personal psychologist if you have one.

It is better for children to take the assessment the younger they are in order to have an earlier diagnosis and could be treated sooner. Some children even take these assessments before attending school to have better preparation. Ask for a second opinion from other registered psychologists and not only from their own school psychologist.
