In any farm, it is important that barriers are erected. Barriers can be used for the following purposes. Fences are commonly used to clearly partition land that separates a person land from another persons piece of land. Another reason for erecting a barrier is to confine livestock in a certain area and prevent them from trespassing in other peoples property. Cattle fencing are commonly used to restrict animal movement.

Another purpose for a fence is keeping out predators from accessing your farm. Some big predators may actually attack and kill small calves. The other reason why fences are important is because of the role they play of keep other peoples animals away from your animals and avoid any mating. There are several types of materials that can be used to construct a fence.

In some states, the height of a fence and the construction process is mandated by law. When a grazing field is divided into smaller portions or paddocks, you would not want your cattle grazing in the wrong paddock hence that is the sole reason for a fence. Also as a farmer, you would not like your livestock going to graze on another persons land or property.

There is a recommended height that farmers ought to observe to avoid any problems from their state authorities. Some states usually recommend or stipulate the height of a fence. The most recommended height is around 3.5 feet to four feet or 1.2 meters. It is difficult for any animal to jump in or out if this height level is maintained.

The materials were barbed wires, woven wires, mesh wire, electrified wire and in some cases all these materials could be combined to make a fence. Board fence is also another common fence that is being used. These conventional materials were not completely abandoned and are being used till to date. If a fence is properly constructed using this conventional materials, it can still become an excellent fence.

Traditional fencing materials generally included woven wire, barbed, electrified and mesh wire. Board fence is also another good fence for livestock. Age, breed and system of production of animals also influence the type of fence to construct. Some of modern fences now include poly coat fence, board fence for cattle, woven wire for livestock and lastly high tensile cattle fence.

Some of the materials common used in the past include, electrified wire, woven, barbed wire, mesh wire and in some rare cases, some farmers may combine all of this materials to make one very strong fence. Board fence was also a common barrier used by some farmers. Every farmer wants a strong, durable and economical fence.

Before settling on a particular fence, first consider the species of your animals, their breed, age, and also their production system. Beef cattle fences will definitely differ from horse fences. The common barriers that are in the market today include, high tensile fences, woven wire for cattle, poly coat and lastly board fence for livestock.
